THE EXROID PROCEDURE IN DETAIL

A single-use probe is used to gently apply a low direct current (up to 16mAmp) to the haemorrhoid. The probe is placed in direct contact with the base of the haemorrhoid, targeting the blood vessels which feed it. No tissue penetration of any kind is required.

This causes a chemical reaction within the vascular feeding vessels, releasing hydrogen gas and hydroxyl ions:

(2 H2O + 2e- > H2 + 2 OH- )

This creates a strong alkaline environment that causes denaturation of protein, thrombosis of the capillary feeding vessels, and a chemical cauterisation within the vascular feeding vessels of the haemorrhoid. This is not a heat treatment.

As treatment progresses, the haemorrhoid visibly shrinks. With the blood flow to the haemorrhoid interrupted, the haemorrhoid continues to shrink for a week, or longer following treatment. As the haemorrhoid shrinks during and after treatment, symptoms are relieved. In many cases, the patient will feel relief immediately after the procedure. The procedure takes up to 10 minutes per haemorrhoid depending on what grade and size they are. eXroid recommends that up to three haemorrhoids can be treated in single treatment session.

The amperage delivered to the base of the haemorrhoid can be varied by pressing the ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons on the hand control. Communicating with the patient during treatment, the eXroid specialist can regulate the current to minimise any discomfort for the patient. If the patient can tolerate a higher current, the treatment will be shorter.

The procedure is exclusively used for the treatment of internal haemorrhoids which provides an option for patients with grade 1 or 2 haemorrhoids who may otherwise have opted for banding or sclerotherapy or for patients with more severe grade 3 or 4 haemorrhoids as an alternative to surgery.

Symptoms & Causes

How do haemorrhoids occur? (Factors)

Increased pressure in the rectum – Chronic diarrhea – Difficult bowel movement or constipation – Holding back the stool – Insufficient physical activity – Not drinking enough water – Overweight – Pregnancy – Regularly eating food low in fibre – Genetic predisposition – Old age

Symptoms of haemorrhoids:

Bleeding – Itching and/or burning – Pain during defecation – Painful feeling in the anus – Swelling in or around the anus – Loss of fluid or mucus

Prevention & Treatment

How to prevent haemorrhoids?

To prevent or deal with symptoms, the most important thing is to make sure your bowel movements are regular and soft. Drink enough water (1.5 to 2 litres/day) – Eat products rich in fibre (such as wholemeal bread, seeds, and certain vegetables) – Try to get enough exercise – Avoid being overweight – Avoid holding up stools – Avoid straining – Do not stand or sit for too long.

Treatment of haemorrhoids:

Haemorrhoids without symptoms generally does not require treatment. If, however, they protrude from the anus during defecation, cause pain and/or bleeding, medical intervention may be necessary. Several treatments are available, depending on the haemeorrhoid location and severity.
